Why Windows Are Your Home's Weak Point
According to ONS and police data, around 30% of UK burglars enter through a window - and in Essex specifically, ground-floor and rear windows account for the majority of forced entries. Yet most homeowners spend on door upgrades and ignore the windows entirely.
The good news: most window break-ins are opportunistic, not planned. A handful of relatively cheap upgrades and habits can move your home from "easy target" to "not worth the risk" - and that's exactly the threshold burglars look at.
The 10 Tips, in Order of Impact
1. Test Every Window Lock - Today
Sounds obvious, but it's the single most common security gap we see. Stiff, broken or missing locks are an open invitation. Open and close every window in the house this weekend. Anything that doesn't lock crisply needs servicing or replacing - usually a £30-£60 hardware fix.
2. Upgrade to Key-Locking Espagnolette Handles
Older cockspur handles can be forced open with a screwdriver in seconds. Key-locking espagnolette handles engage multiple lock points along the sash and resist forced entry far more effectively. They're also what most home insurers now require for full cover.
3. Specify Laminated Glass on Vulnerable Windows
Laminated glass has a tough plastic interlayer that holds the pane together even when smashed. Burglars hate it - the noise of repeated impact draws attention and entry takes minutes, not seconds. Ideal for ground-floor windows, side gates, glazed doors and easily-accessed flat roof windows.
4. Look for PAS 24 Certified Hardware
PAS 24 is the British security standard for windows and doors. Modern hardware compliant with PAS 24:2022 has been independently tested against forced entry techniques. Ask for it specifically when replacing handles, hinges or full sashes.
5. Never Leave Windows Open When Out (Even Upstairs)
Burglars use ladders, drainpipes and flat roof extensions far more than homeowners assume. Use the "night vent" position - the window stays locked but slightly ajar for airflow. It's available on virtually every modern uPVC window.
6. Fix Broken or Cracked Glass Immediately

7. Fit Window Restrictors
These limit how far a window can open - typically to 100mm. Great for child safety and security. Ventilation is preserved, intruder entry is prevented. Around £15 per window.
8. Keep Sills and Window Views Clear
Laptops, tablets, jewellery, parcels, car keys - if it's visible from the pavement, you're advertising it. Move valuables out of sightlines, especially at the front of the house and on ground-floor rear windows.
9. Trim Bushes Below Window Height
Overgrown shrubs at the front of your home give burglars cover to work unobserved. Keep planting below 1m at the front and sides. The ideal: clear sightlines from the road to your front and side windows.
10. Combine Lighting and Timer Switches
PIR-activated security lights at the rear and sides startle opportunists. Inside, smart plugs or timer switches that stagger lamps create the impression someone's home. Both are sub-£20 fixes that consistently rate as the most cost-effective burglary deterrents in police data.
Insurance Implications
Many home insurers now require:
- Key-operated locks on all ground-floor and accessible upper-floor windows
- BS 3621 compliant locks on external doors
- Reasonable steps to secure broken windows after a break-in (typically same-day boarding)
