You Almost Certainly Don't Need a New Patio Door

The single most common quote our customers arrive with is "£2,400 for a new patio door". In nine cases out of ten, the door itself is fine. The frame, the rollers, the locks and the tracks are doing their job - it's only the sealed glass unit that has cracked, blown or misty. Replace just the glass and the cost typically falls to between £180 and £450 per panel, fitted, for the patio sizes most homes have.

Real 2026 UK Patio Door Glass Costs

Patio door glass is heavier and almost always toughened (Building Regulations Document N classifies any glass below 800mm from finished floor as a "critical location" requiring safety glass). That pushes prices above ordinary window units. Typical fitted prices for sliding patio doors in 2026:

• Standard 4-15-4 toughened sealed unit (up to 1.8m tall): £180 - £280
• Larger panels (2.0 - 2.4m tall, common on 2- and 3-pane sliders): £260 - £390
• Triple glazed toughened (4-12-4-12-4 with argon): £320 - £480
• Laminated safety glass (recommended for ground floor security): add £40 - £90 per panel
• Self-cleaning Pilkington Activ outer pane: add £35 - £70 per panel

Quotes from large national replacement-window companies often start at £1,500 and climb past £3,000 - that price reflects sales overheads and a brand new frame you don't need.

The 7 Things That Move the Price

1. Glass area - the single biggest factor. Toughened glass is priced per square metre and patio panels are large.
2. Toughened vs laminated - toughened shatters into harmless pebbles, laminated holds together. Laminated costs more but is harder to break through.
3. Coating - Low-E (low-emissivity) coatings improve U-values and are now standard. Solar-control coatings cost more but cut summer heat.
4. Cavity gas - argon is standard, krypton (warmer, narrower cavity) costs around 25 percent more.
5. Spacer bar - traditional aluminium is cheapest, "warm-edge" composite spacers (recommended) add a few pounds and reduce edge condensation.
6. Access - first-floor balconies, conservatory rear elevations and tight side returns add labour time.
7. Beading direction - older patio doors are externally beaded, which means removing the glass from outside; modern doors are internally beaded, which is faster.

How the Patio Glass Swap Actually Works

Day 1 - Free Survey (15 minutes)

We measure the existing glass to the millimetre, photograph the frame and beading, check the door is square in the opening, and note glass spec. You get a fixed written quote on the spot.

Day 2-6 - Bespoke Manufacturing

Your unit is cut, toughened (a 700C heat process - cannot be cut after toughening), assembled with the chosen spacer and gas-filled at our supplier's facility. Lead time is usually 4-6 working days.

Day 7 - Fit (1-2 hours per panel)

We arrive with a glass suction lifter, a soft mat for the old unit, fresh glazing tape and silicone. We remove the beading, ease the failed unit out, dry-fit the new one to confirm a perfect line, then bed it in with the correct packers and re-fit the beading. Final clean and you're done.

Should I Replace the Whole Door Instead?

Honest answer: only if any of these apply.

• The frame itself is rotten, warped or no longer airtight.
• The rollers and tracks are worn beyond economic repair (£180 - £350 to fix is usually still cheaper than a new door).
• You want to upgrade to bi-fold or sliding aluminium doors for a wider opening.
• The door predates 2002 and you want a measurable improvement in U-value.

In every other case, replacing the glass alone is the right call.
