A Misty Door Panel Does Not Mean a New Door
Doors take more abuse than any window in the house. They get slammed, they flex in the frame, and the glazed panel sits in a unit that moves several times a day. That constant movement is exactly why door sealed units tend to fail before the windows around them - the perimeter seal fatigues, moisture gets in, and you are left looking at a permanently hazy panel.
The good news is the same as ever: the door slab, the hinges, the multipoint lock and the frame are all still fine. Only the glass has failed, and only the glass needs replacing.

Why Door Glass Costs More Than Window Glass of the Same Size
Homeowners often compare a door quote to a window quote of identical dimensions and wonder why the door is higher. Four reasons:
- Safety glass is mandatory. Building Regulations Approved Document K treats all glazing in a door, and any glazing within 300mm of a door edge up to 1500mm high, as a critical location. It has to be toughened or laminated - no exceptions.
- Handling risk. Door units are tall, narrow and heavy. They flex when carried, which raises breakage risk in transit and on site.
- Fitting is slower. The door usually needs to be re-toed-and-heeled after glazing so it closes squarely and the lock still engages. Get the packers wrong and the door drops on its hinges.
- Beading is tighter. Door beads are shorter, stiffer and easier to snap, so they come out slowly.

Toughened or Laminated for a Door?
Both satisfy the regulations. Toughened is around five times stronger than ordinary glass and shatters into blunt pebbles. Laminated holds together on a plastic interlayer, so an intruder who breaks it still has a sheet in the way - which is why we recommend laminated on the outer pane of any accessible ground-floor door. What About Composite and UPVC Doors?
Composite doors have a moulded glazing aperture with a bonded or beaded cassette. In most cases the sealed unit still comes out through internal beading, so a glass-only swap works exactly the same way. The exception is a fully bonded decorative cassette on some older designs, where the manufacturer supplies the panel as one part - we will tell you at survey which you have.

Measure takes fifteen minutes. Bespoke toughened door units are typically ready in 4-6 working days. Fitting is 45-90 minutes per panel, including re-hanging checks. If the glass is smashed, we board up the same day and return when the new unit lands.
