Can a Cracked Window Actually Be Repaired?
Short answer: the glass itself cannot be repaired - but the window almost always can. On a double glazed window, only the cracked sealed glass unit needs swapping. The frame, hinges, locks, handles, cill and beading all stay exactly where they are. That's why a repair costs £95-£280 instead of the £500-£1,200 a national replacement firm will quote for a "new window".
The one exception is single-glazed sash, Crittall or period timber windows, where the pane sits directly in the frame with putty or beading. Those are also repairable in place - typically £70-£140 - but the glass has to be cut to the exact rebate size on the day.
Can a Cracked Double Pane (Double Glazed) Window Be Repaired?
Yes, and it's the most common cracked-window repair we do. A double glazed window is really two sheets of glass factory-sealed around an argon-filled gap - together called a "sealed unit" or "IGU" (insulating glass unit). When one pane cracks, the whole unit has to be replaced as a single piece because the argon gas will have leaked out and moisture will get between the panes within weeks.
The good news: the replacement unit is bespoke-manufactured to the millimetre and dropped into your existing frame in 30-60 minutes. You don't lose a day. You don't lose the window. And you keep your existing paint, plaster and internal decoration completely untouched.
First: Is It a Crack You Can Live With Overnight?
Not every cracked window is an emergency. Before you panic-call a 24-hour glazier (and pay 3x for the privilege), check three things:
- Is it the outer pane or the inner pane? A cracked outer pane on a double glazed unit is weatherproof for days because the inner pane is still intact.
- Is the glass still in the frame? If yes, you're stable. If shards are loose or have fallen out, treat as urgent.
- Ground floor or accessible? A crack you can reach from the street is a security concern overnight; a first-floor bedroom crack rarely is.
If all three answers are reassuring, you can wait 1-3 days for a standard daytime appointment and pay standard prices. If not, see the same-day section below.

| Same-day call-out surcharge | +£40 - £80 on top of fitted price |

How Much Does It Cost to Repair a Cracked Window Across Essex?
Real 2026 prices by town, based on our own bookings this year. Prices are for a single cracked pane in a double glazed unit up to 0.8 m² (standard bedroom or kitchen casement), fully supplied and fitted with a 25-year guarantee.
| Area | Postcodes | Typical fitted price | Standard lead time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basildon, Laindon, Pitsea | SS13-SS16 | £95 - £140 | 1-3 days |
| Billericay, Wickford, Rayleigh | CM11-CM12, SS11-SS12, SS6 | £100 - £145 | 2-4 days |
| Brentwood, Shenfield, Hutton | CM13-CM15 | £105 - £150 | 2-4 days |
| Chelmsford, Springfield, Writtle | CM1-CM3 | £110 - £160 | 3-5 days |
| Romford, Gidea Park, Hornchurch | RM1-RM12 | £110 - £160 | 3-5 days |
| Southend, Westcliff, Leigh-on-Sea | SS0-SS9 | £110 - £165 | 3-5 days |
| Grays, Tilbury, Chafford Hundred | RM15-RM20 | £100 - £150 | 2-4 days |
Coastal Southend and Leigh-on-Sea prices run slightly higher because we fit upgraded warm-edge spacer units as standard on properties within half a mile of the seafront - salt air noticeably shortens the life of aluminium-spacer units.
The First Hour: What to Do Safely
- Keep children and pets out of the room. Crack lines can release shards without warning, especially in toughened glass.
- Don't touch the crack with bare hands. Even a hairline crack edge will slice cleanly through skin.
- Stabilise the pane with clear packing tape. Run two strips in an X across the cracked area on both sides if possible. This holds shards in place until the glazier arrives.
- Photograph it in daylight. A clear photo helps the glazier specify and price the correct unit before they leave the workshop.
- Sweep up any fallen shards with a stiff brush. Never with bare hands or a vacuum - tiny splinters embed in the brush head and reappear weeks later.
What NOT to Do With a Cracked Window
- Don't apply a "crack repair kit" from Amazon or Halfords. These are formulated for laminated car windscreens and do nothing structural on household glass. They also make the eventual professional repair harder and messier.
- Don't slam or reopen the window to "test" if it's stable. Movement propagates the crack fast, especially on toughened glass, which can shatter without warning once compromised.
- Don't leave a cracked pane exposed to a heat source (radiator directly below, log burner, direct sun through curtains). Thermal expansion widens the crack overnight.
- Don't accept a same-day quote over the phone from a firm that hasn't seen a photo. Phone quotes on emergency lines are almost always inflated by 2-3x.
- Don't replace the whole window. A cracked pane is a sealed-unit job, not a frame job. If someone quotes you £600+ for a "new window" when only the glass is cracked, get a second opinion.
Crack Types and What Caused Them
- Impact crack: Spiderweb pattern radiating from a central point. Football, hailstone, ladder strike. Almost always insurable.
- Thermal stress crack: Single clean line, often near an edge, no impact point. Caused by sharp temperature differences (e.g. radiator under a window, partial shading). Insurance treats these as wear and tear.
- Stress fracture from poor fitting: Crack appears at a corner shortly after fitting. The fitter's responsibility, not yours - if under guarantee, it's a free fix.
- Toughened glass shatter: The entire pane turns into thousands of small cubes (rather than sharp shards). Caused by nickel-sulphide inclusion, edge damage or sudden impact. Always needs full unit replacement.
Will My Home Insurance Cover It?
Most UK buildings insurance policies cover accidental damage to glass as standard - usually with a £50-£100 excess. Key points:
- Impact damage = generally covered. Football, ladder, vandalism, storm debris.
- Thermal cracks = generally not covered (treated as gradual deterioration).
- Sealed unit failure (misting) = never covered. Different repair, different cost - see our guide to blown windows.
- You can usually choose your own glazier. Many policies push their preferred contractor; you're entitled to a competitive quote from an independent.
- Always get a written quote first. If the repair is under your excess (e.g. £95 repair vs £100 excess), don't claim - it'll affect future premiums for no benefit.
Same-Day vs Next-Day: When Each Makes Sense
True same-day glazing is expensive because the bespoke unit has to be cut and tempered in hours rather than days. Reserve it for:
- Ground floor windows facing a public path or street
- Front and back doors with cracked panes (insurance often requires immediate making-safe)
- Properties left unoccupied
- Toughened or laminated panels that have fully shattered
For everything else, a far cheaper option is a free overnight board-up plus a standard 2-4 day fit. Many independent Essex glaziers, ourselves included, board up free of charge if you're booking the permanent fix with us.
Repair vs Replace: The Honest Comparison
| Sealed unit repair | Full window replacement | |
|---|---|---|
| Typical 2026 cost per window | £95 - £280 | £550 - £1,400 |
| Time on site | 30-60 minutes | Half a day per window |
| Internal disruption | None - existing plaster and paint untouched | Redecoration usually needed around frame |
| Guarantee | 25 years on the unit | 10 years on the frame, 25 on the glass |
| When it makes sense | Frame is sound - the glass has failed | Frame is rotten, warped, or 30+ years old |
Fewer than 1 in 20 cracked-window jobs actually justify a full frame replacement. If the frame closes properly, locks properly and isn't visibly rotten, a sealed unit swap is the right call. For the borderline cases see our repair vs replacement guide.
Can a Crack Be Repaired Without Replacing the Glass?
Honestly, no - not in any way that lasts. Resin injection works on small chips in vehicle windscreens because windscreens are laminated; standard household glass is annealed or toughened and cannot be resin-repaired structurally. Any "crack repair" product you find online will be cosmetic at best and will not restore the seal in a double glazed unit. The only proper fix is unit replacement.
Cracked Pane vs Misty Pane: Different Problem, Different Fix
A cracked pane has a visible fracture line and often a clear impact point. A misty pane has moisture or a hazy film sitting between the two sheets of glass - the glass itself is intact but the perimeter seal has failed. Both are sealed-unit jobs, both are the same repair method - but misting is never covered by insurance because it's classed as gradual wear. See our full misty window repair cost guide if you're not sure which you're looking at.
